Early history[ edit ] John Speed ‘s map of the County Palatine of Lancaster, The county was established in , later than many other counties. During Roman times the area was part of the Brigantes tribal area in the military zone of Roman Britain. In the centuries after the Roman withdrawal in AD the northern parts of the county probably formed part of the Brythonic kingdom of Rheged , a successor entity to the Brigantes tribe. During the mid-8th century, the area was incorporated into the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria , which became a part of England in the 10th century. Modern history[ edit ] The historic county palatine boundaries in red and the ceremonial county in green Lancashire is smaller than its historical extent following a major reform of local government. It did not cover the western part of Todmorden , where the ancient border between Lancashire and Yorkshire passes through the middle of the town. During the 20th century, the county became increasingly urbanised, particularly the southern part. Helens and Wigan were added Blackpool , Southport , and Warrington

The Manchester was proposed by Daniel Adamson, a Manchester businessman, in and was to be a waterway capable of conveying ocean-going ships from Eastham on the River Mersey to a proposed dock complex close to the centre of Manchester. It would be following the same route as the Mersey and Irwell Navigation from Runcorn to Manchester with several new cuts and extensions, plus a completely new section from Eastham on the Wirral to Runcorn, effectively hugging the banks of the River Mersey Estuary.
After a long, protracted battle, the Act of Parliament was passed on the third reading and Lord Egerton cut the first sod of earth on 11th November The construction of the Ship canal only directly affected the Bridgewater Canal in two ways. The second change was at the famous Barton Aqueduct. The lift at Anderton was the brainchild of the engineer for the River Weaver who was, none other than… Edward Leader Williams although designed and built by Edwin Clark , the engineer for the Ship Canal.
The Swing Aqueduct and the proposed swing bridges on the Ship Canal were to be of similar design to the road bridges that spanned the River Weaver also designed by Edward Leader Williams. The aqueduct would pivot on an island built in the centre of the Ship Canal and would swing, full of water, to allow ships to pass either side. The navigation trough would be sealed at either end prior to swinging by lock gates to conserve water.
The swinging action is achieved hydraulically, being controlled from a tower on the island that overlooks both the aqueduct and the adjacent Barton Road Bridge. On the northern bank of the Ship Canal remains part of one of the buttresses and approach embankments of the original aqueduct in addition to the site of the Barton Road Aqueduct where the road was spanned by another smaller aqueduct.

This was replaced a few years later by another camera It also and had an accessory shoe and sync socket allowing use of a flash unit.

Holt mod Jim and I had decided early in the week to give the moderate ride a miss but to ride up to the Gallery Coffee Shop in Hawarden and then cycle home. This is exactly what we did but events conspired to turn it in to the moderate ride. We were joined soon afterwards by Mike and the five of us set off for Hawarden. We turned right towards Queensferry and followed the twisting road past the back of the Airbus factory at Broughton.
After turning right at the roundabout we turned left into Rake Lane and started the inevitable ascent up to Hawarden and what would normally have been the starting point for our ride. There were a number of other Easy Riders present but most were heading off on the brisk ride and the only addition to our group was Dave P. So six of us set off down the Wrexham Road before turning left onto the small road that would take us up the back of Bilberry Wood to the footbridge across the A Then a left and right into Sandy Lane.
From there we turned into Shordley Road.
